Delegates from all the minor wards in Umuona Community, Aguata Local Government Area, yesterday, 29th December, 2020, elected Chief Kenneth Okoli(President General) alongside nine others to pilot the affairs of the town union.
Earlier before the election proper, the Traditional Ruler of the town, Igwe Humphrey Ejesieme had during his address announced suspension of the election on the grounds that COVID 19 directives issued by the state government were not adequately followed.
Trouble started over modalities for the election with majority of the delegates opting for the Open Balot System, which they claimed was the consensus reached at the last Congress of the Town Union but did not sit well with the Igwe.
However, officials of the Anambra State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters who were on ground to monitor the election adopted the consensus but noted that all COVID 19 Protocol must be adhered to. Elections into various positions were later held.
Members of the executive include: Chief Kenneth Okoli (President General), Mr Gilbert Obiakor(Vice president general) and Muobike Anthony(Secretary).
Others are Obiora Okechi, Assistant Secretary, Sunday Ezeofor, Treasurer, Kenneth Okafor, Financial Secretary, Uche Okoli Nwike, Welfare Officer, Chukwudi Obiorah PRO, Izuchukwu Nduka and Anyaeji Chukwueloka Provosts.
They were later inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Okey Enyosiobi assisted by Dr. Anthony Okoli and Barrister Austin Oguejiofor.
In his acceptance speech, the new PG, Chief Kenneth Okoli thanked the people of Umuona for finding him and his Exco members worthy of serving the community and pledged to promote peace and the development of the town.
Reacting to the development, the Traditional Ruler, Igwe Humphrey Ejesieme expressed surprise that the elections later held despite his advise but pledged to support every effort that will bring progress in his town.
He expressed willingness to work with the new Umuona Executive to move the Community forward.
